In First Contested Primary Since 1972, Uniejewski Renews Call for Debate
Voters haven’t seen a contested primary here in over 50 years, and Nick Uniejewski says it’s time for a real debate before March 17.
Chicago, IL – In the first contested Democratic primary for State Senate in the 6th District since 1972, voters deserve a public debate.
Earlier this week, Democratic candidate Nick Uniejewski challenged State Sen. Sara Feigenholtz to an in-person debate. Her campaign declined, citing legislative session obligations and a “full campaign schedule.”
The Uniejewski campaign has offered flexibility, including a one-hour virtual debate before Election Day.
This request follows months of missed opportunities. Community organizations—including Northside Democracy for America and Indivisible Lincoln Park/Lakeview—sought to host forums earlier in the campaign. Those invitations were declined or did not move forward. In recent weeks, additional candidate events have been cancelled or skipped.
“A full campaign schedule in a contested primary should include showing up for voters side by side,” said Uniejewski. “That’s part of democracy.”
Uniejewski, a longtime organizer who has worked with Indivisible and local grassroots coalitions, has built his campaign around participation. Over the past year, his team has hosted more than 250 salons and community events and knocked on more than 70,000 doors across the district.
“I believe democracy is something you practice,” Uniejewski said. “You knock the doors. You host the conversations. And yes—you take the debate stage.”
Uniejewski’s campaign remains ready to coordinate a debate before Election Day on March 17. Community groups or media outlets interested in hosting are encouraged to contact the campaign.
